Intentional Community

Crieff Hills offers a unique opportunity for those seeking an extended opportunity of rest and renewal. Ruth House is now the home of an intentional Christian community where residents may live for two weeks up to twelve months, sharing a healthy rhythm of worship, work and rest. This comfortable home has a full kitchen, living room, and activity lounge. It is surrounded by nature trails, a prayer shelter and labyrinth, and extensive gardens. This program is suitable for those observing a formal sabbatical or intermission from work or ministry, those in a time of vocational change or discernment, and those who simply wish to experience an extended experience of restful living.

Community Life

A sabbath-rich life includes both activity and rest. Residents will have ample time for creative and personal pursuits, and a weekly book study and a monthly seminar will explore spiritual themes and practices. Each person will also participate in the life and work of Crieff Hills, contributing their gifts to the ongoing work of the centre according to their interests and abilities. One-on-one monthly coaching or spiritual direction are available for integrating and reflecting on the experience (optional and at an additional cost to participants).

Accommodation and Meals

The House of Ruth can accommodate up to 5 residents at a time. Each participant will have their own furnished bedroom and will share a bathroom with up to 2 others. Residents will be responsible for their own meals in the shared kitchen.

How much does it cost?

A set monthly rate will cover the cost of program, utilities and operating costs. A minimum deposit of two months contributions (first and last month) will be paid by the move-in date.

2022 Fee Schedule

less than 3 months $175/week

3 months $650/month
6 months $600/month
12 months $500/month

Application and Admission Process
Applicants will fill out an application. Some questions will be basic and others will require longer essay-style answers. At least 3 references must be included and will be from community, spiritual and work/other categories. These will be submitted electronically to the director. An interviewing panel will meet with each potential member, either on site or via Zoom. When a successful applicant is chosen a move-in date will be decided.

Each new resident will receive an orientation tour with a current community member to learn the rule and rhythm of the house. They will also meet with the director to discuss possibilities for contributions according to their gifts.

Who can apply?
In order to fully benefit from this program, residents must be 20 years or older, independent and in good health. Crieff Hills does not have the resources to care for those with severe illness, and a degree of physical capacity is required in order to navigate the site and 2-level house. We are rooted in the Christian tradition but there is no doctrinal, denominational or church membership requirement. We do, however, expect a familiarity or affiliation with a religious community and a commitment to Christian worship and study. We hope to hear from at least one reference familiar with the spiritual life of the applicant.

Residents are welcome to host personal guests and if needed overnight accommodations may be arranged when space permits. No pets or children can be accommodated as residents but may visit when arranged.
